In our previous articles we set out the requirements for civil marriages in Zimbabwe between locals and foreign nationals. This article focuses on civil marriage bookings for a Court wedding. Parties are encouraged to book for court weddings at least a month before their selected date to avoid any inconveniences. Section 18 of the Marriages Act [Chapter 5:15] provides that no marriage officer shall solemnise any marriage unless, among other requirements a marriage licence has been issued.
What is required to obtain a marriage license;
For a marriage between Zimbabweans marrying for the first time,
- National I.Ds, both original and certified copies.
- Passport size photographs in colour, two (2) for each with jacket and a tie for men.
- Revenue stamp.
- In the event that spouses have their own private marriage officer, a letter from that marriage officer is required to be submitted simultaneously with the other requirements.
Additional requirements for marriages between Zimbabweans not marrying for the first time;
- Divorce decree and a certified copy from the High Court in the event of a divorce; or
- Master Certificate from High Court [Chapter 5:11], or
- Death Certificate and certified copy in the event of being widowed.
Additional requirements for a foreign nationals;
- A non-marriage certificate from country of residence (confirmed by the Embassy).
- A Police Clearance from Zimbabwe Republic Police (C.I.D) and country of residence.
- A marriage clearance from the Immigration Department of Zimbabwe.
- Zimbabweans who intend to marry foreign nationals are also required to obtain a certificate of non-marriage from the Registrar General’s office
