The establishment of Arrupe Jesuit University: Proclamation 3 of 2020 (Statutory Instrument 155 of 2020)

The recently proclaimed Statutory Instrument 154 of 2020 highlights the existence of a newly established private University to be known as Arrupe Jesuit University of the Roman Catholic Church, formerly, Arrupe Jesuit College. His Excellency, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa through Proclamation 3 of 2020 has declared that Arrupe Jesuit University be established setting out the terms of the charter.


In terms of its establishment the University shall be a body corporate capable of suing and being sued in its own name. The university shall be known as a non-profit organization which is to fulfill its mission of forming men and women of conscience, competence, compassion and commitment under the patronage of its trustees. Lastly, the University shall be a Jesuit Institution, African in Spirit and shall draw on and seek to enrich the Christian message through out Africa.


The objectives and powers of the University are set out in section 5 of the proclamation. However, the main objective is to provide integral education open to all women and men for the benefit of Zimbabwe and other countries, particularly African countries. In order to achieve its objectives, it shall have powers to: provide courses leading to degrees, diplomas or certificates; to provide and promote research; to hold examinations and to confer degrees; to institute professorship, lectureship, or research fellowships; to invest, to borrow or lend money for the purpose of achieving its objectives etc.


Factors such as governance, membership of the University and how the University will be managed are well provided for in the proclamation.
